Debra Barone and Two Emmys

Everybody Loves Raymond made her a household name. That role earned her seven Emmy nominations for lead actress in a comedy, and she won the award in 2000 and again in 2001.

The part also brought her a Screen Actors Guild Award, shared with the cast, and the Viewers for Quality Television award for best actress in a comedy. The Television Academy notes that she also received three SAG nominations in the best actress category for the show.

Between that show and her next long run, she also starred opposite Kelsey Grammer in the Fox comedy Back to You.

From Ohio State to New York

She earned a drama degree from Ohio State University and moved to New York in 1980 to study acting with William Esper. Her Broadway debut came in 1987, in the chorus of Don’t Get God Started.

With other actors she helped form Stage Three, an off Broadway company. When Stage Three took one of its productions to Los Angeles, a casting director for the ABC drama thirtysomething noticed her, and the part became a recurring role.

Speaking at her Walk of Fame ceremony, she recalled that she had no agent and was 30 years old when she moved to Los Angeles, joking that this made her the equivalent of Seabiscuit.

Guest roles followed on series including Alien Nation, Matlock, Party of Five and The King of Queens. On film she appeared in Memoirs of an Invisible Man, Beethoven, New Age and Space Jam.

Before Raymond she also had leading roles in the sitcoms Room for Two and Someone Like Me and a part in Women of the House. Later she starred in the Hallmark Hall of Fame film Front of the Class, a TNT version of Neil Simon’s The Goodbye Girl and the ABC miniseries The Path to 9/11.

On stage she played Stella in the Second Stage production of Theresa Rebeck’s comedy The Scene, a performance that earned her a Lortel Award nomination.

The Middle and Later Work

From 2009 to 2018 she played Frankie Heck in the ABC comedy The Middle. The Walk of Fame describes Frankie as an overstressed wife and mother of three working hard to hold her family and her sanity together.

She then led the CBS series Carol’s Second Act, which ran for one season.

She also hosted and produced the Food Network show Patricia Heaton Parties, which won a Daytime Emmy. In 2024 she joined the second season of the Frasier revival in a recurring role.

Producing and Writing

In 2001 she cofounded the production company FourBoys Films, which she runs with her husband, David Hunt. Its credits include Amazing Grace, directed by Michael Apted, the documentary The Bituminous Coal Queens of Pennsylvania and the TNT film The Engagement Ring, which she produced and starred in.

FourBoys also teamed with MyDamnChannel on the web series Versailles, in which she played an eccentric B movie star named Evelyn Anders. Her book Motherhood and Hollywood, subtitled How to Get a Job Like Mine, became a New York Times bestseller.

Charity Work

The Hollywood Walk of Fame biography describes her as active with a number of charities. She has long supported Big Brothers Big Sisters and was a Big Sister herself in New York in her twenties.

She has worked with the TS Alliance for nearly a decade, taking part in its annual Comedy for a Cure fundraiser for tuberous sclerosis research and treatment. She has also travelled to Sierra Leone with the Lighthouse Medical Mission and helped Operation Gratitude prepare care packages for troops overseas.

The same biography adds that she gives to Reece’s Rainbow, which helps with the adoption of children who have Down syndrome and other special needs.

A Dramatic Turn in The Ritual

In 2025 she appeared in The Ritual as the Mother Superior, opposite Al Pacino and Dan Stevens. Directed by David Midell, the film draws on the 1928 exorcism case of Emma Schmidt in Iowa.

The film was promoted as the true story behind The Exorcist, although Variety’s critic pointed out that William Peter Blatty’s novel is usually tied more closely to a 1940s case in Maryland. Abigail Cowen plays Emma, and Ashley Greene plays a young nun at the convent.

In Variety’s account of the plot, it is Heaton’s Mother Superior who insists that Emma be moved to the convent basement once the trouble starts.

A Star on Hollywood Boulevard

She received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on 22 May 2012, at 6533 Hollywood Boulevard in the television category. It was the 2,472nd star on the Walk, and Ray Romano and Neil Flynn, her screen husbands from her two biggest sitcoms, spoke at the ceremony. Brad Garrett, Doris Roberts and Atticus Shaffer were also there to help unveil it.
