In July 2026 she released Confessions II, her first new album in seven years and a follow up to Confessions on a Dance Floor from 2005. The Guardian reported that the Celebration tour set her thinking about her past and inspired the record, which she made with producer Stuart Price.
Danceteria recalls the New York club scene of the 1980s, and The Guardian noted that it namechecks the artists Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. Fragile is dedicated to her late brother Christopher, The Test is a duet with her daughter Lourdes, and Stromae adds a spoken word passage elsewhere on the album.
The Guardian pointed out that Confessions on a Dance Floor sold about 10 million copies, while her 2019 album Madame X sold around half a million. Tracks such as I Feel So Free draw on classic Chicago house, including Lil Louis’ French Kiss.
Variety reported that the album opened at number one on the Billboard 200 with 134,000 equivalent units, her 10th chart topping album there and her 13th number one album in the UK. That comfortably beat the 95,000 units Madame X opened with in 2019. Her duet with Sabrina Carpenter, Bring Your Love, peaked at number 74 on the Hot 100.
Variety added that it was her best streaming week ever and her strongest sales week since 2012, with 114,000 copies sold. Billboard’s figures made her the first act with a number one album in the 2020s to have also topped the chart in three earlier decades.
Those decades were the 1980s, 2000s and 2010s, since none of her 1990s albums reached the top. Her label, Warner, pointed out that she had joined The Beatles as one of only two acts with 10 number one albums in both the United States and the UK.
She announced the Celebration Tour, her first greatest hits tour, in January 2023. It opened in London that October, and she called the opening night an evening she would never forget.
The Guardian noted that the staging recreated the videos for older hits such as Don’t Tell Me and Human Nature. The tour marked 40 years of her music and ran to 80 shows across Europe and North America.
It ended on 4 May 2024 with a free concert on Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, where the BBC reported an estimated crowd of more than 1.6 million. Giant screens lined the beach, and the Brazilian singer Anitta joined her on stage. The set included Like a Prayer, Vogue and Nothing Really Matters.
Guinness World Records names her the best selling female recording artist of all time, a title she has held since 2009, and Madonna has put her own sales at more than 400 million records.
Guinness notes that she gave that figure in a 2022 interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and that precise sales figures are hard to obtain. It adds that only The Beatles, Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson are widely thought to have sold more records worldwide.
It also lists her as the highest grossing female touring artist. Her Sticky and Sweet tour of 2008 and 2009 earned $411 million, a record for a female artist at the time, and her touring gross had reached about $1.39 billion by July 2022, fifth overall behind The Rolling Stones, U2, Elton John and Bruce Springsteen.
She also holds the record for the most top five Hot 100 entries by a female artist, with 28, and was the first act to reach 50 number ones on a single Billboard chart.
Billboard’s all time Hot 100 artist ranking places her second overall, behind only The Beatles, which Guinness lists as the highest position for a woman. She also shares the record for the most multi platinum albums by a female artist in the United States, 12, with Barbra Streisand.
In the UK she holds the female records for the most number one albums, 12 at the time of the Guinness list including the Evita soundtrack, and the most top 10 singles, with 63. The BBC noted that since Holiday broke into the UK charts in 1984 she has collected more than 70 hits there, 13 of them number one singles.
Her honours include seven Grammy Awards and two Golden Globes. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008, in her first year of eligibility.
On screen she starred in Desperately Seeking Susan, A League of Their Own and Evita. Her Golden Globe for Evita came in the musical or comedy actress category.
