The Leader of LE SSERAFIM

In 2022 she was named leader of LE SSERAFIM. The group debuted on 2 May 2022 with the EP Fearless.

She told Weverse Magazine the label suggested the role after watching how she already looked after the younger members, which surprised her because she is the youngest in her extended family and had never led anyone before. Her approach was practical, showing newer members how to fit their microphones and walking them through how a live show would run.

She also said she wanted to be someone the others could lean on emotionally, not only the person who handles schedules.

By her own description she is shy and rarely starts conversations, so she made a point of approaching the younger members first. She has said the team gives feedback freely in practice without worrying about seniority.

Produce 48 and IZ*ONE

Her first big break came through the 2018 Mnet survival show Produce 48. Yonhap reported that 96 Korean and Japanese contestants took part and that live audience votes decided the final lineup.

She finished 10th in the final ranking and became one of the 12 members of IZ*ONE. The group’s nine Korean and three Japanese members debuted on 29 October 2018 with the EP Color*Iz, led by the single La Vie en Rose.

IZ*ONE stayed together for about two and a half years, until its contract ended in April 2021. She later said that felt short for a group, and that she regretted the things she never had the chance to show.

Becoming a Trainee Again

Rather than go solo, she chose to start over in a new team. She signed with Source Music, and her former label supported the decision.

She told the magazine she still had dreams she wanted to reach as part of a group, and that she chose to follow her heart rather than take the safe option. Finding her former IZ*ONE bandmate Sakura Miyawaki at the new label helped, and she said the two became far closer than they had been before.

She said she filmed her practice, asked for feedback and repeated routines until they improved. She also built a stronger and lower vocal tone, which the title track Fearless asked of her, partly by singing along to English pop, R&B and other styles she rarely listened to.

The Fearless choreography pushed her too. IZ*ONE routines had been built around formations for a large group, while the new songs asked for subtler control, so she worked closely with the performance director on the chorus poses.

The concept of that first album grew out of long interviews with the members, which is why she has described it as so personal to her.

A New Look for a New Start

Her styling changed with the move. She told Weverse Magazine that her hair, makeup and clothes all felt different at first, but that she enjoyed trying new things and saw the new image as a natural sign of starting again.

On 27 August 2024 she became Swarovski’s ambassador for South Korea. In February 2026 she fronted PlayStation’s Southeast Asia Lunar New Year campaign for the PS5.

Teen Vogue reported that her first Swarovski images featured pieces from the Millenia collection, including drop earrings and a tennis necklace in blue and a white watch. The appointment came a year after LE SSERAFIM were named Louis Vuitton ambassadors as a group, and just before the release of the group’s mini album Crazy on 30 August 2024.

Songwriting and Features

On the debut EP, one of her lines made it into Blue Flame after the members submitted lyrics that were judged without names attached. The line, written for one of Garam’s verses, drew on something she had once heard, that blue flames burn hotter than red ones.

She has also worked with artists outside the group. In 2024 she featured on Tori Kelly’s song Spruce, adding a Korean spoken word bridge. It is the fifth track on Kelly’s album Tori, and Kelly told NME she had no notes on the verse Kim sent back.

In July 2025 she was featured alongside Taehyun of TOMORROW X TOGETHER on Butterflies, a single by JVKE. Billboard described the track as built on rollicking ragtime piano, and she said she had long enjoyed his music.

Her 2026 So Far

LE SSERAFIM released its second studio album, Pureflow pt. 1, on 22 May 2026, and it entered the Billboard 200 at number 10. The Korea Herald reported in June that, according to her agency Source Music, she had taken about a month away from group schedules to treat neck pain and would rejoin the others the following week.

The group had been promoting the focus track Boompala without her and had played an iHeartRadio show in Los Angeles in the meantime.
