Before the solo career, Kehlani sang with PopLyfe, an Oakland teen band whose members were students at the Oakland School of the Arts. The group reached the 2011 finale of America’s Got Talent on NBC but missed out on the grand prize.
The band included children of Tony! Toni! Toné! singer D’Wayne Wiggins and jazz drummer Ranzel Merritt. The $1 million prize that season went to singer Landau Eugene Murphy Jr.

Their self titled fifth album, Kehlani, arrived on 24 April 2026 through Tsunami Mob and Atlantic. It opened with 69,000 equivalent album units in the United States, debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 and finally gave them a number one on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
Billboard broke that first week down as 45,000 units from streaming, drawn from more than 45 million on demand streams, and 24,000 from album sales. It also became their fourth number one on Top R&B Albums and extended a run of seven straight top 10 releases on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.
