She started out as a singer in musical productions, according to the Television Academy, before her breakthrough on television as Mary Camden in the family drama 7th Heaven.
The series, created by Brenda Hampton, debuted on The WB in 1996 and ran for 11 seasons and nearly 250 episodes. It was a major early hit for the network and one of the last shows produced by Aaron Spelling before his death in 2006.
The Academy describes it as the longest running series ever aired on The WB, and also as the longest running family drama in television history.

Variety’s sources said the new show would focus on a diverse family and that none of the original cast would return. No network or streamer was attached at that stage.
Her film career took off with the lead in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003). She went on to appear in Blade Trinity, The Illusionist, The A-Team and Total Recall.
In 2017 she starred in and executive produced the USA Network series The Sinner. The Television Academy notes that the role brought her a Golden Globe nomination for best actress in a miniseries or television film.

In 2025 she led The Better Sister on Prime Video, based on the novel by Alafair Burke. She plays Chloe opposite Elizabeth Banks as her estranged sister Nicky, and the series premiered on 29 May 2025.
Variety’s description of the plot sets up the tension well. Chloe seems to have the perfect life with her lawyer husband, Adam, and teenage son, Ethan, while Nicky struggles to stay clean and pay the bills, until Adam’s murder exposes long buried family secrets.
Craig Gillespie directed, Olivia Milch and Regina Corrado served as showrunners, and Biel executive produced with Purple through Iron Ocean. Gillespie also produced through Fortunate Jack Productions, and he said he was excited to be teaming up with Tomorrow Studios again.
The series was a coproduction between Tomorrow Studios and Amazon MGM Studios, with Banks producing through her own company, Brownstone, and Alafair Burke consulting on the adaptation. Tomorrow Studios called it the first project in its new venture with Gillespie.
Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, described the show as a thriller full of twists that is really about family feuds and forgiveness.
Gillespie told Variety it was his first time working with either actress and that watching them play rival sisters would be a blast. The showrunners said they felt lucky to have Biel and Banks as partners, praising the rich and layered work of both women.
