In July 2026 she led Furious, an eight episode Hulu thriller created by Elizabeth Meriwether. Rossum plays FBI agent Alice Black and also serves as an executive producer, while Lola Petticrew plays Catherine, the killer Alice is hunting.
Rossum told Variety she first brought the idea to Hulu after watching Black Widow, the 1987 thriller in which Debra Winger plays a federal agent. In Furious, Alice is a newly minted FBI agent tracking a woman who has been killing wealthy and powerful predators in New York City.
Variety’s critic explained that the title comes from the way Alice and Catherine cope with their emotional wounds. Alice is a recent transfer from the NYPD, and the case puts her on a joint team with her former supervisor Danny, played by Scoot McNairy, and her ex Marshall, a detective played by Jake Lacy.
Quincy Tyler Bernstine plays Nora Washington, Alice’s new supervisor at the FBI, and the critic singled out her dry humour. The review also praised the scenes between Rossum and Lacy for peeling back layers of anger, resentment and love.
Hulu’s own summary says that as the lives of the agent and the killer start to intertwine, the line between right and wrong begins to blur. Steve Way, known for Ramy, plays a client Catherine looks after in her day job as a home health aide.
Meriwether’s earlier series include The Dropout and Dying for Sex. Rossum produced Furious through her company, Composition 8, alongside Ronald Bass, Matt Olmstead and Sam Hoffman. Brian Kirk directed the first two episodes, and the show comes from 20th Television and Searchlight Television.
Before her screen career, Rossum sang in the Metropolitan Opera’s children’s chorus. She told Variety that producers of the film Songcatcher came to the opera to audition young singers, and that search gave her a first screen role. She said the shoot was her first real lesson in what it takes to become a different person for a role, and that she was hooked.
She has named Songcatcher and Mystic River as her two big early breaks. Mystic River put her on set with Sean Penn and Tim Robbins. She has said she was so in awe of the actors around her that she hardly remembers the experience.
Songcatcher was filmed in the backwoods of North Carolina, a world away from Manhattan. When it reached the Sundance Film Festival, she recalled, people were surprised to learn she was not from Appalachia.
She credits a strict singing teacher at the opera with the discipline she later needed on Shameless, where showrunner John Wells expected actors to arrive knowing every line. Her advice to her younger self, she told Variety, would be to breathe more and stop chasing perfection, because the best moments often come from mistakes.
Playing Christine in The Phantom of the Opera earned her a 2005 Golden Globe nomination for best actress in a musical or comedy film. Her film credits include The Day After Tomorrow, Beautiful Creatures and Cold Pursuit. She has released two albums, Inside Out in 2007 and Sentimental Journey in 2013.
The Golden Globes also nominated the film itself for best musical or comedy picture and its song Learn to Be Lonely for best original song. Mystic River, released the year before, had been her first studio film.
From the mid 2010s she began directing and producing television. She starred in and produced the Peacock series Angelyne in 2022.
She later joined the Apple TV+ series The Crowded Room in 2023.
In autumn 2024 she returned to the New York stage in Amy Berryman’s play Walden at Second Stage’s Tony Kiser Theater. She played Stella, and the production opened on 7 November under director Whitney White after previews from 16 October.
Set in the near future, the play follows Stella and her fiancé, Bryan, played by Motell Foster, as they wait at their cabin for her estranged twin sister, Cassie, played by Zoë Winters. The twins were raised by an astronaut father to become NASA scientists, but Cassie has just come back from a moon mission while Stella has left NASA behind. Their reunion forces the sisters to choose between staying on Earth and a future in space.
Walden first opened at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London in May 2021 before its American premiere at TheatreWorks in Hartford that August. The New York production had sets by Matt Saunders, costumes by Qween Jean, lighting by Adam Honoré and sound by Lee Kinney.
