Her first television job came in 2013 with Let It Snow, a Hallmark Channel film starring Candace Cameron Bure and Alan Thicke, in which she played Angeline Bennett. A year later she appeared as Charlotte Spehn in The Color of Rain alongside Lacey Chabert.
Those first credits were small, but within a year she had landed the recurring role that made her name.
Her first long run came on Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, the first scripted series Bravo ever made. From 2015 to 2018 she played Zooey Hernandez Frumpkis across 26 episodes. In 2016 she joined the first season of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency as the missing heiress Lydia Spring. She appeared in seven episodes of the series, which starred Samuel Barnett in the title role and Elijah Wood as his reluctant sidekick Todd Brotzman.
Dare Me showed how quickly a small part can grow. Thornton was first cast in a recurring role in the USA Network drama, which was adapted from a novel by Megan Abbott. She was then promoted to series regular as Tacy Cassidy, and the show premiered on December 29, 2019.
Between 2021 and 2023 she appeared as Birdie in three episodes of The CW’s Nancy Drew. She then joined the Paramount+ series School Spirits as Chloe and appeared from 2023 to 2025. TVLine has reported that School Spirits was renewed for a fourth season.

This version updates the story for the smartphone era. In Variety’s review, Chris runs a gossip account on Instagram called Carrie Red and uses it to mock Carrie and many others.
Thornton told TV Insider that the longer format gave the show room to explore why Chris acts the way she does, and that everything she does comes from a place of pain. She said she played her with a lot of empathy and summed up this take on the character as hurt people hurt people. She was just as clear that none of it justifies what Chris does.
Critics have responded well. TechRadar called her performance great and noted that the series avoids turning Chris into a cartoonish villain. TVLine pointed to Next Best Picture, which described her as the true standout of the cast.
Speaking at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2026, she told an interviewer that cruelty affects the person experiencing it, the person carrying it out and the whole community around them, and that it is never worth it.
Her film credits include The Ray and Girl Gone Bad in 2022 and What Comes Next in 2025, along with The Mental State. On Girl Gone Bad she worked as a producer as well as playing Samantha.
The Mental State took a while to reach audiences. The Hollywood Reporter covered the independent drama’s casting in 2018, when Thornton was announced as Bethany Forrest, and the film was released several years later. In 2022 she also played Emma in Caught in His Web, a television film.
